A roof sends water somewhere — gutters decide where.
A roof sends water somewhere — gutters decide where. Properly designed and installed gutter systems direct water away from your foundation, protect your siding and landscaping, and prevent the accumulated moisture issues that lead to dry rot, mold, and foundation problems. Keith Roofing has been installing gutters as part of complete roofing work since 1952, and we install seamless aluminum gutters, copper gutter systems, and gutter guards as standalone projects.
Gutters matter more in the Bay Area climate than most homeowners realize. Our concentrated winter rainfall — most of the year's precipitation falls in December through March — means gutters handle significant volumes during atmospheric-river storm events. Properly sized gutters with adequate downspout placement handle these loads; undersized or improperly sloped gutters overflow, sending water directly against siding and foundation.
Our gutter work includes: seamless aluminum gutter fabrication and installation (gutters fabricated on-site to exact length, no seam joints that can leak); copper gutter systems for premium and historic homes (50+ year service life, attractive patina development over time); gutter guard installations to reduce debris clogging; gutter repair and replacement for existing systems; and full gutter/downspout replacement coordinated with roof replacement projects.
Seamless aluminum gutters are the industry standard for good reason. Fabricated on-site to the exact length required for each run, seamless gutters eliminate the leak-prone joints of sectional gutters. Heavy-gauge (.032"+) aluminum is durable, lightweight, cost-effective, and available in color-matched finishes to complement your home's trim.
Proper installation matters enormously. Gutters should be pitched slightly toward downspouts (approximately 1/4" per 10 feet of run), fastened with hidden hanger systems to fascia (not exposed spike-and-ferrule hangers), sized appropriately for roof square footage and rainfall intensity (typical 5" K-style for most homes, 6" for larger roof areas), and positioned with adequate downspout count for drainage capacity.
Copper gutters cost 3-4x aluminum but deliver 50+ year service life (vs. 20-30 for aluminum), develop an attractive verdigris patina that complements historic architecture, and never require painting or color refresh. For historic homes, premium architectural homes, and homeowners planning to stay long-term, copper can be the right choice — particularly on homes where the gutters are architectural features rather than just functional components.
Homes with significant overhead tree coverage (particularly oak, eucalyptus, and redwood common in the Bay Area) can benefit from gutter guard installation. But not all gutter guards are equal. Foam inserts look inexpensive but clog over time. Simple screen guards catch large debris but let smaller needles and seeds through. Reverse-curve or solid-cover guards (like Leaf Relief or similar) work well but add meaningful cost. Fine-mesh stainless steel guards (Gutterglove, MasterShield) are typically the best balance of performance and cost.
For homes with tree overhang, guards reduce cleaning frequency from 3-4 times annually to 1-2 times every 2-3 years. For homes without significant tree coverage, guards may not be worth the investment. We help evaluate honestly.
Water cascading over gutter edges during heavy rain indicates undersized gutters, clogged drainage, or improper pitch. Repair or replacement prevents siding and foundation damage.
Sagging or separated gutters from failed hangers or fascia rot. Often repairable with new hanger installation and fascia repair, but sometimes indicates need for complete replacement.
Water accumulation at the base of exterior walls or in basement after storms indicates drainage failure. Usually traces back to gutter overflow or inadequate downspout extension.
Corroded aluminum, dented sections, or damaged joints compromise gutter performance. Patching can sometimes extend life; widespread damage signals replacement.
While less common in the Bay Area climate, debris accumulation in gutters during rainy season can cause overflow damage. Cleaning or guard installation addresses this.
Gutter replacement coordinated with roof replacement delivers a clean integrated installation. The few days during tear-off are the natural time to address aging gutters.
Industry-standard seamless aluminum gutter profile. Handles typical South Bay residential rainfall capacity. Available in 15+ color options to match trim. $8-12 per linear foot installed.
Larger capacity for homes with significant roof area, steep pitches, or high rainfall exposure. Also standard for commercial applications. $10-15 per linear foot installed.
Traditional profile for Craftsman, Victorian, and historic architectural styles where visible gutter aesthetic matters. $12-18 per linear foot installed.
Premium material for historic and architectural homes. 50+ year service life with natural patina. $25-40 per linear foot installed.
Modern profile in copper for premium homes. $22-35 per linear foot installed.
Various systems from foam ($2-4/ft) to fine-mesh stainless steel ($10-18/ft) depending on tree exposure and desired performance. We evaluate tree coverage and recommend appropriate system.
We measure linear footage of gutter needed, determine appropriate size (5" or 6"), plan downspout placement for drainage capacity, and document any fascia or soffit issues that need addressing.
Aluminum gutters are available in 15+ factory-applied colors to match trim. We order material for fabrication based on project specification.
Safe removal of existing gutter system, fascia inspection and repair as needed, disposal of old material.
Gutters are fabricated on-site from coil stock using our gutter machine — exact length for each run, no seam joints.
Gutters installed with hidden hanger system (not exposed spikes) at appropriate intervals. Proper pitch toward downspouts. Downspout installation with extensions directing water away from foundation.
When gutters are part of a roof project, we handle both as integrated scope — cleaner installation, better detailing at eaves, single warranty contact.
We use .032" aluminum as standard (some competitors use thinner .027" to save cost). Heavier material resists damage and delivers longer service life.
Hidden hangers fastened to fascia — not exposed spike-and-ferrule systems that loosen over time. Proper hanger spacing for load capacity.
Many general roofers don't do copper work. We maintain copper-specific tooling, experience, and supplier relationships for premium installations.
A 1926 Spanish Revival in Willow Glen was getting a full clay tile roof restoration. The homeowner wanted the gutter system to match the premium level of the roof investment. We designed and installed a custom half-round copper gutter system with copper downspouts and decorative leader boxes at main corners. Installation included proper fascia reinforcement, hidden hanger systems, and downspout transitions to below-grade drainage. Copper will develop its natural patina over 5-10 years, eventually reaching the verdigris blue-green that will complement the terracotta tile roof perfectly. Expected service life: 50+ years.
